Welcome back to our Mattakesett project. This extensive renovation project in collaboration with Tristan Atwood of MV Engineering and Design transitioned this seasonal cottage into a luxurious primary residence.
The clients wanted a modern and organic feel for their home, free of clutter, for a functional, multi-generational living. However, the original design of the house and many of the existing furniture pieces were more aligned with a small Vineyard cottage. By opening up the existing kitchen, dining and living spaces, redesigning the primary bedroom suite and adding a new wing including two new bedrooms and bathrooms, this once closed off cottage is transformed into the bright, open, serene coastal home the clients wanted. Check out our before and after to see the transformation.
One of the clients’ (and our) favorite aspects about the house was that it was nestled in the woods, so much so that they jokingly referred to it as “The Treehouse”. Wanting to keep that feeling was integral to the design approach. There was a large focus on decorative lighting and maximizing natural light throughout the home. As avid readers, the clients wanted to be sure that no matter where they were in their home they would be able to comfortably enjoy a book.
To add a bit of softness to the space, but understanding that they were not the focal point of the room, stationary drapery panels were added in the dining area. Stationary panels require less fabric for manufacturing since they do not need to cover the whole expanse of the window. They still add a dimensional layer to the room for a finished feeling, but require less of the budget, letting the clients spend that elsewhere.
The kitchen is the most utilized room of the whole house. As passionate chefs, extra care was taken to make sure that every corner of the kitchen was exactly what the clients wanted. The symmetry of the new kitchen was paramount to the feeling of the contemporary and modern vibe, while details like the wood island and hood detail, as well as an organic style tile backsplash kept the kitchen from feeling too stark. Here, we intentionally left the windows uncovered, allowing full light and unobstructed views of the surrounding tree line, maintaining the connection to the outdoors.
Off the kitchen, the newly constructed screened porch is a space for the family to truly feel they are in their Treehouse. Surrounded by uncovered windows, the screened porch has quickly become one of the clients’ favorite spaces in their newly renovated home and we can see why. Perfect for lounging or dining, the porch is equipped with the elevated design of the interior, with the functionality of outdoor living. The textural nature of the furniture pieces and decorative lighting bring in coastal touches, while the clean lines of the pieces maintain the modern design of the home.
Another focal area of the redesign was the new luxurious primary bathroom en suite. The clients wanted a spa-like experience, which we created with a serene color palette and organically inspired elements. The shower features a porcelain tile that looks like wood and a pebble style tile flooring. Both tiles were sourced from MV Tile here on the island. The beadboard design of the shower tile mimics maple wood and when paired with the mosaic style flooring, evokes a natural organic feeling.
To achieve the bathroom footprint the clients wanted, it was necessary to remove a closet out of the primary suite to allow for the expansion. This resulted in a long, narrow space for the bathroom, presenting a design challenge.
Working with the new architecture, the wall-to-wall vanity and dual sink set up was designed to work with the space constraints of the new room instead of against it. This maximizes the usable area and allows everything to have the breathing room that the space needs.
Watching the transformative nature of this renovation has been so special. We can’t wait to share more of what we’ve been working on lately.

As a seasonal residence and part-time rental property, there were things about the original house that the homeowners wanted to change to make this a year round home. Many of the spaces in the home prior to the renovation were closed off and separate, and many of the furniture pieces were painted in more traditional, dated colors
We begin the transformation in the living and dining area. In the original home, the lofted space above the seating area left the space feeling small and dark. The new lofted ceilings and open floor plan allow so much more natural light, making the space feel much more inviting.
Removing the spiral staircase in the middle of the living area allowed a much more open floor plan, now able to accommodate the large sectional.
Prior to the renovation, the kitchen was part of the living and dining area. Where it once stood is now the new built in wet bar.
The new kitchen was moved to the other side of the room and built out. The kitchen is one of our favorite and most impactful transformations in the home. Cooking is an integral part of these clients’ lifestyle, so having a large functional kitchen is of the utmost importance.
Elements of the original home were carried into the new design of the kitchen to incorporate some of the original cottage’s charm. The new ceilings were done in the same style as the original home with white beams and nickel gap design.
The island is 16’ feet long so that it can accommodate the clients and their grown children and their families. The clients sourced the slab themselves, patiently waiting for the right piece to speak to them. It was important to them that the counter top not have a seam, which was a challenge, but was integral to the clean modern aesthetic goals.
Wanting to approach the construction process in a sustainable way, we worked with the clients on incorporating existing furniture pieces and components of the home where possible. The original granite counter tops in the kitchen were repurposed in the design as vanities in one of the other bathrooms. The client's previous bed frame was integrated into the new design of the Primary Bedroom Suite.
The primary bedroom redesign focused around reusing the existing bed frame, but expanding the overall footprint of the room to incorporate the built in workstation and a larger en-suite. Wanting to keep the serene feeling of the room, we stuck with a neutral color palette and added natural elements for an organic perspective.
We’ve introduced texture in the form of the sconces above the bed, the nightstands and the woven window coverings. These elements add warmth back into the room to tie in the warmth of the bed frame, while the shape of the sconce pendant, the modern lines of the bench and the desk chair still feel modern and contemporary.
We love bringing these transformations to life and designing homes that get to the root of what will inspire our clients. More of this project is still to come, so stay tuned as we take a look at some of the other spaces.

When thinking of a Martha’s Vineyard home, you may not immediately picture a green velvet bed. However, the combination of the luxe texture of velvet, paired here against a light bleached wood tone of the bed frame result in a primary bedroom that brings the moodier, out of the box approach the client envisioned to a space that still works in a coastal environment.
To bring this particular vision to life, we extensively utilized the resources of our own on-site custom workroom. Specializing in slipcovers, reupholstery, custom pillows and cushions, our workroom can breathe new life into existing items or create beautiful pieces from scratch.
This project was completed at a time when the pandemic made the custom furniture industry unreliable, due to long lead times and backorders. Knowing that they were aiming at a set move-in date, the safer choice for this client was to modify existing furniture rather than buying new custom pieces.
To achieve the client’s vision of a bold and dramatic bedroom, our workroom reupholstered this canopy style bed in a green velvet fabric. We love the tactile addition of the velvet fabric to the sleek and tailored silhouette of the bed frame.
Balancing traditional themes with modern styling was a large focus of the design of this home. We chose an ikat print fabric for the bench at the end of the bed to bring in a preppy element. The fabric is printed on unbleached linen, which adds a relaxed, informal feel. This is offset by the modern black base, the bench still feels at home amidst other contemporary components in the room.
A custom-made pillow in the same ikat fabric rounds out the design, resulting in a highly stylized boutique and customized feel.
A custom pillow grouping or a custom-made cushion can transform a room. This built-in window seat features a custom made cushion, the dreamiest spot to lounge in this little girls room.
The rolled edge detailing and the buttonless tufting are nods to traditional design fundamentals. We’ve paired the cushion with a textured window covering and patterned wallpaper, resulting in an exemplary balance of preppy and contemporary. The pastel color pallet is youthful but still fits with the sophisticated and stylized design scheme in the rest of the home.
A curated, custom pillow package is an impactful way to add personality to any area of your home. In this project, the blend of Ralph Lauren plaid with rich jewel tones and overlapping small scale floral patterns weave in the traditional sensibilities while the sleek silhouette of the sofas bring modern flair.
Our custom workroom has been creating and reviving furniture, cushions and pillows for more than 40 years. Available to those working though our Interior Design Department or our Furniture Store, we love being able to fabricate pieces with longevity and personality, meant to be enjoyed for years to come.

By mixing high gloss finishes, moody tones and clean forms with fun patterns like ikat prints, textures and natural woods, we were able to create a space that feels balanced, cohesive and still gives the stylized dramatic impact the client wanted.
The green ceiling and trim are some of our favorite moments of this project. Benjamin Moore Vintage Vogue is a beautiful smoky green that pairs beautifully with the tonal accents of the wood coffee table, woven poufs and rich tones of the pillows in the great room sitting area.
A balance of old and new helps make design feel timeless and curated. Here, we’ve paired an antique dining chair with a traditional silhouette against a modern, high-gloss dining table. The contrast of the black light fixture creates a throughline to the contemporary style of the dining table, while the warmth of the hemp grasscloth wallcovering from Phillip Jeffries adds texture and dimension to the space.
We love grasscloth wallcoverings as they are a refined choice while still lending an organic feel to a room.
Smaller spaces are sometimes a great choice for a stronger pattern or an element of surprise. A bold ikat print from Schumacher (one of our go-to resources for wallcoverings) brings a highly stylized boutique feel to this powder room.
Another bold choice comes from the moody tone of the primary bedroom walls. While a light, breezy room can feel like a seaside oasis, this commanding color is reminiscent of the nautical history of our island.
The tradtional elements reimagined with bold color and textures were so fun to work with. Our Interior Design Department's keen understanding of color theory, materials and textures paired with a client-first approach allows us to create thoughtfully curated, effortlessly cohesive, one-of-a-kind homes.
More of this exciting project is yet to come. If you are interested in our design services, please email sophia@vineyarddecorators.com today!

Inspired by modern farmhouse homes, the clients wanted to feel that they were nestled among the trees and surrounding woods. The architecture of the home, completed by the talented team at Sullivan + Associates, creates a secluded backyard which allows for outdoor lounging and dining surrounded by the lush landscaping.
Architect - Sullivan + Associates
GC- Dukes County Builders
Landscape Design - Second Nature Designs
Pool Design - Atlantic Pools
The neutral color palette of the exterior spaces is inspired by the muted tones of coastal materials. Soft greys evoke the cool seawashed appearance of rocks washed up on shore, neutral cushions and pillows are reminiscent of sandy beaches and the property is accented by lush greenery reminding us of coastal dunes. The clients wanted to feel part of the natural environment around them. We achieved this throughout the home in the exterior finish materials and the use of teak furniture.
Our 2024 outdoor collection includes organic shapes and timeless and refined silhouettes making it versatile for many different design styles. The collection is designed, manufactured and imported by our own team, and available for delivery on Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and Cape Cod.
Steps away from the stone patio is the screened porch. Perfect for those who want to maintain a semblance of outdoor living all year round, multi season rooms are one of our favorites in the home. Built around an incredible stone fireplace, this porch area gives the comforts of interior living with the functionality to stand up to guests returning from days spent at the beach or poolside afternoons.
Since the interior design themes features wood beams and cabinetry, along with other natural elements to evoke the feeling of bringing the outdoors inside, teak was the natural choice for the exterior spaces of this project.
The Vineyard Teak collection offers refined styling and comfort. Here, we’ve paired it with a faux concrete stone coffee table and slipcovered swivel chairs. The result is a layered blend of materials that are livable and comfortable, without sacrificing an elevated aesthetic.
A firepit with Adirondack chairs is one of our favorite set ups. Nothing elevates time at home quite like getting a fire going- especially when you’ve thoughtfully curated a space for gathering around the flame.
The landscaping design, courtesy of Second Nature Designs, favors grasses and evergreens, creating a palette of muted tones to mirror the natural stone. Over time, teak will weather and patina to a silver grey color, further complementing the naturalistic landscaping.
The organic, curved design of the Soho teak collection was the perfect choice for this seating area to continue the natural theme. Here, we’ve paired the live edge natural teak slab table with the matching Soho dining chair.
While we often choose to mix and match styles in the interior of our homes, the exterior spaces are a place where it may make sense to choose pieces from the same collection. This allows for the architecture and landscape design of the outdoor spaces to remain the focal point and for the furniture to accentuate the beauty of these areas.
The woven nature of our Azure lounge chair introduces texture and contrast. This organic design features synthetic wicker, which is impervious to cracking and fraying, unlike its interior counterpart, making it perfectly suited for outdoor applications.
Introducing more textured contrast, the Bowline dining chair and the Cyrus faux concrete dining table create an elevated, organic grouping, perfect for dining al fresco.
The 2024 outdoor collection is all in stock and ready for immediate delivery to Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and Cape Cod. You can browse these pieces and the rest of the collection here.
This project exudes cool coastal charm. We are so excited to continue to share the development of Paddock Road with you, stay tuned for more reveals to come!

As a rental on Martha’s Vineyard, the homeowners realized the appeal of having blue paint throughout for a coastal theme. However, they still wanted their home to be representative of their vision of cooler, muted colors, so ultimately they chose Benjamin Moore Ambler Slate, a blue with a charcoal undertone.
Setting the stage in the entryway, this color is carried throughout the home in a few other spaces for continuity, such as the front door, the wet bar and a powder room.
On Martha’s Vineyard where indoor/outdoor living is the norm, we rely on high performance materials to withstand the demands of coastal living. The custom bench cushion was fabricated in house by our own custom workroom.
The subtle neutral stripe gives a beachy visual texture while still keeping with the refined coastal vibe of the home. Sunbrella fabric is a high performance option for upholstery pieces due to its durability and resistance to staining and fading.
To create moments of visual interest in areas that may seem like afterthoughts, like a washroom or a laundry room, the client worked closely with MV Tile Company here on the Vineyard for a few key areas to make the home feel special and custom.
The laundry room tile was sourced from MV Tile and features a ceramic pattern tile with a subtle inlay.
We also love the fan design of the tile in this shower, also sourced through MV Tile.
One of our favorite ways to bring texture and natural elements into clients homes is through custom window treatments. This primary bathroom features a soaking tub looking out on stunning landscaping. While a sun-drenched bathing experience sounds divine, the clients wanted to be sure that there would be privacy options in place. We opted for window coverings that allow the top of the shade to drop down, allowing light to come in through the top of the window, while still allowing coverage of the shade while in the bath for privacy.
Inspired by the beauty and nature around their property, the architectural team at Sullivan and Associates designed two walls of floor to ceiling windows in the great room centered on a natural stone fireplace. Likewise inspired, the clients wanted to be able to sit in their living space and still enjoy the surrounding landscape. Framed around the walls of windows are 15 ft tall linen draperies fabricated by our in-house custom workroom. In such a large space, it was important to keep the drapery neutral so it could function and add to the overall feel of the room without overpowering the space. The drapery helps protect the furniture and also add another layer of privacy.
The dining area features one of our live edge slab tables, a favorite in our stocking program. We manufacture them ourselves in one of our factories in Indonesia. The slabs are available in a range of sizes and each one is unique. We have had clients use them not only as dining tables, but also as built in desks or worktables, and even had a client make them into a staircase!
The finished basement creates an extra hangout space for the family either when hosting or on the occasion of bad weather. The ping pong table folds away easily, allowing flexible space in the room and the large sectional is perfect for lounging or watching movies.
This project was so much fun to bring to life. Stay tuned for more of Paddock Road, where we explore the bedrooms and outdoor spaces.

]]>In anticipation of the warmer months ahead, we've put together a list of our favorite summer home essentials to help you maximize your outdoor island living this season
]]>
And as we are all eager to fill our days, to fill our days with activities and experiences that bring us out of our homes, let’s not forget to indulge in the simpler pleasures warm weather can bring.
Whether it’s morning coffee on the porch conversing late into the night around the fire, or showering outdoors after an afternoon in the garden, the summer season allows us to experience so many additional comforts and joys of home.
One of my favorite morning rituals in the summer is to enjoy my cup of coffee outside on the deck. Starting the day off quietly and leisurely makes me feel like I’m on vacation while in my own backyard. The Morning Glory Rocker is perfect for early morning lounging with its subtle sway waking you up . Plus, with an easy to wipe down frame and no cushion to absorb the morning dew, it makes for a dry and comfy spot to enjoy while still in your Pjs. (And they just make your porch look SO good.)
When you have company visiting or renters booked for more than a weekend, chances are they’re going to want to spend a night or two in and nothing elevates time at home quite like getting a fire going- especially when you’ve thoughtfully curated a space for gathering around the flame.
When designing your fire pit space, you don’t necessarily need to build a custom structure. There are so many interesting free standing pits available to serve as the focal point of your space. We are currently obsessed with the sleek and minimal Fire Bowl by Gloster Furniture.
This particular bowl pairs perfectly with our newest- and more modern- wicker lounge chair.
We recommend completing fire pit spaces with lanterns or bistro lights as well as baskets of throw blankets so you can stay cozy and comfortable late into the night.
Umbrellas are probably the most essential outdoor living items you can invest in. Whether you are lounging by the pool, dining on the deck, or hanging out at the beach, at some point you’re going to want coverage from that unforgiving sun. We offer a variety of umbrellas for pretty much any need or use.
Parasol umbrellas are probably the most popular and versatile umbrellas out there. With a center pole, they offer 360 degree coverage which is perfect for a dining table and pool chaises.
The Tuuci Ocean Master Parasol is our most recommended parasol umbrella. Its marine grade strength makes it durable enough to withstand the Vineyard’s coastal winds and with proper care will last in pristine condition for years thanks to its weatherproof aluminum finish.
The Ocean Master comes in a variety of machine washable Sunbrella fabric canopy colors. We typically spec lighter colors in open spaces by pools or on beaches so you feel protected but don't keep out too much light.
We have outdoor lounge and dining options that are in-stock and available for delivery or pickup. Whether you are looking to entertain or enjoy the space yourself, our team will help you select furnishings to optimize your outdoor spaces.
Our stocking program offers the highest quality materials and designs to help you make the most of all this wonderful season has to offer. Let our Design Consultants help you design your outdoor oasis today! Many options are in-stock or already incoming so you don’t have to worry about long lead times.

Emily joined our team in 2017 with a degree in marketing communications. As a result of her focused work ethic and positive attitude, Emily has found herself adapting into many of the roles at the company. She has received multiple promotions throughout her career at Vineyard Decorators so far, and now, Emily is now the General Manager of the store, overseeing day-to-day operations.
Ava came to Vineyard Decorators after spending summers on the Vineyard while growing up in Western Massachusetts. Ava, who graduated with a degree in Architectural Studies, started as a Design Assistant, learning the ropes of Vineyard Decorators from the front desk. She has since developed her skill set and she now balances the multifaceted role of Design Consultant while also assisting the Interior Design Department with larger scale projects.
Nina, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, brings a unique set of skills to her role with Vineyard Decorators, having spent 10 years working in construction alongside her husband in the design-build business they formed together on the Vineyard. Nina began her career at Vineyard Decorators as a Design Consultant in the furniture store. Her practical knowledge of building and her design education allows her to take on projects of all scope, and as a result, Nina has been the driving force behind our new Interior Design Studio.

The Vineyard has long been a haven for creatives, free-thinkers, and artists. We love the support that the local community has for these creators and are privileged to showcase some of their work here on the walls of Vineyard Decorators.
The roots of the Vineyard often run deep, and in addition to being talented artists, many of the artisans featured in our store are personal friends of the business’ owner, Whitney Brush.
Whitney and his sister Sophia grew up surrounded by art and wanted a way to support their friends and other local artists to reach a wider audience.
While we have a curated collection from each artist listed below at our store, we encourage you to visit galleries, their studios and other Vineyard businesses to view these artists’ work.
Colin Ruel is a self-taught artist from the fishing village of Menemsha. Inspired by his memories of growing up on the Island, his use of gradient color encapsulates the beauty of the Vineyard in a serene way. You can find more of Colin’s work at the newly opened Ruel Gallery in Menemsha, along with the work of his wife, Nettie Kent, a native Islander, whose jewelry is also showcased there. The gallery was a huge success this summer and we’re looking forward to seeing what Colin continues to do with the space.
Lily Keller gains inspiration from the natural beauty of the Vineyard. Her process captures the vibrant personality of the island with cool ocean tones and warm, energetic pops of color. Lily actively shares her process on Instagram, where she’s built up a considerable following. Lily’s work can also be found at Salte in Edgartown.
Josh Robinson White of Vineyard Lights Photography’s process of printing his photographs on aluminum creates a unique, almost backlit effect. We love this iconic shot of the MV Home, the Vineyard’s largest freight vessel. We have special ordered this commanding image and others in various sizes for our client’s projects.
If you are looking to incorporate local art on a budget or furnish and decorate a rental home, you may find that prints are a more economical way to achieve your look. We carry prints from Abe Pieciak and Brandon Newton.
Abe Pieciak moved to the Vineyard in pursuit of a culinary career. However, he discovered his passion for art and began experimenting with watercolors and sculpture. His distinct style of filling in watercolor fish prints with fishing lures are some of our most popular prints. They also make great housewarming or host gifts. You can find Abe’s work at Great Water Gallery, set to open in early spring of 2021 in Mashpee, MA.
Brandon Newton’s experimentation with the juxtaposition of light and dark provide a unique perspective of the Vineyard. He is able to capture beautiful moments of stillness in his work, connecting the viewer to the image on the canvas. You can find Brandon’s original work at North Water Gallery in Edgartown, MA.
Incorporating local art and supporting artists doesn’t only have to be through hanging pieces on your walls. Micah Thanhauser, a Martha’s Vineyard native, is the creator behind Merry Farm Pottery. His minimally processed natural materials produce lively, functional, and engaging pieces for your home. He specializes in dishes that beautifully compliment the bounty of a Vineyard harvest. Micah often hosts collaborative open studio sessions on Thursday afternoons at his studio in West Tisbury. Each week, he invites a local artisan to showcase their work. Follow Merry Farm Pottery on Instagram for updates.
Vineyard Wick and Bath's Beth Thigith vacationed regularly to the Vineyard before deciding to call it home. Her line of candles, bath salts and lotions bring the scents of the Vineyard to your home. We love styling candles with coffee table books and a decorative tray. When the candle burns through, you can reuse the jar for functional and aesthetically pleasing storage. You can find Vineyard Wick and Bath's candles in the Vineyard Decorators showroom and at other local businesses around the island.
Even in small vignettes in our showroom, we love that art can tie together a whole look. Use the color of your artwork to inform your pillow selection or decor elements. Interior Design is like a symphony, layering elements that complement each other for a harmonious final product. More than anything, art is a way to allow for personal expression in your home. It’s an area where you can take a risk, incorporate color, or just highlight an image that speaks to you.

We’re going to give you a glimpse into a few of the projects we’re working on now — an exterior kitchen project, an interior kitchen and bath renovation, as well as a basement wet bar.
]]>The months we spent experimenting with recipes gave way to honing our green thumb in the garden. Then we turned our attention to our outdoor spaces for safe, socially distant fun. Our home improvement wheels are still churning away and now we’re setting our sights on other ways to continue to curate our home oases for optimal enjoyment this year.
Our Interior Design Department is currently working on a few projects that we are excited to share with you. Since many are spending more time at their Vineyard residences, it’s important now more than ever that your home is ready for you to design your island life, however that looks. In addition to furniture planning and layout, our Interior Design Department also offers interior finish selection and interior architecture services. We can also work with your contractor and architect on new build construction. The department is also happy to take on interior remodeling projects from bathrooms to interior kitchens.
We’re going to give you a glimpse into a few of the projects we’re working on now — an exterior kitchen project, an interior kitchen and bath renovation, as well as a basement wet bar.
*Note: All photos are either rough design sketches or inspirational photos we’ve shared with our clients in presentations.
Dining al fresco is one of our favorite ways to enjoy a meal, and now, one of the safer ways. One of our projects is taking al fresco dining to the next level. Imagine being able to create a bespoke dining experience right in your backyard, preparing, cooking, and even cleaning up after the meal all outside.
Enter the outdoor kitchen.
The indoor-outdoor trend is not new in the world of design. Incorporating performance elements into different areas of the home allows for a life lived freely, fluidly, and without worry. Now that we’re spending more time at home and outdoors, we find ourselves wanting that same fluidity in our exterior spaces.
Our Katama clients have been considering ways to expand the function of their outdoor space after moving in. They have been enjoying the pool and outdoor lounge area this summer, but were looking for something to take their oasis to the next level.
We are working closely with their landscape architect on the plans to implement a full-scale outdoor dining experience, equipped with a refrigerator, ice machine, grill, side burners, and a smoker. We specced powder-coated stainless steel cabinetry from Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens. The powder coat finish protects the stainless steel from rain, snow and salt air, making it a great choice for Vineyard homes. The cabinets are customizable, from the style of the door to the color of the hardware.
Since outdoor spaces are a continuation of the interiors, our Interior Design Department wanted to be sure that the theme of their interior kitchen was carried over to the exterior to ensure the whole home had a cohesive feel. Much of the interior was done in a fairly traditional style, which we’ve updated with the addition of modern and minimalistic elements. The interior kitchen features white, shaker-style cabinets, which we are carrying over to the exterior kitchen.
The kitchen is the heart of the home, whether inside or out. Our Interior Design Department is also working on an interior kitchen renovation in partnership with Martha’s Vineyard Construction.
As entertainers and musicians, our West Tisbury clients were looking for a way to maximize use of their first-level kitchen and dining area. As a post and beam house, opportunities for structural updates were limited; however, design and renovations don’t have to be extensive to be impactful. By removing one wall, the room opened up, allowing room for the custom dining banquette, a functional way to have the dining area set back from the front of the room, thus giving the clients more space to house their instruments and perform. Our on-site custom workroom is fabricating the dining nook cushion as well as a french cushion on the window seat. The clients love slow mornings with coffee and each others’ company spent on a large window seat, overflowing with natural light.
New French doors will also be installed opposite the dining nook. They will open up out to the terrace, flooding the kitchen with natural light, which will also help the space feel larger.
We wanted to capture the rustic nature of this post and beam build by incorporating natural elements like wood finish cabinets and soapstone countertops. Soapstone is non-porous and naturally antimicrobial, a beautiful and functional choice for a working kitchen.
These clients love cooking meals together in their kitchen. They know that sometimes creating an epic meal requires an epic mess, and they opted for a pedal-operated sink to allow for efficient, sanitary, and easy cleaning. Modern elements like engineered wood floors allow for the look of hardwood with the ability to incorporate radiant heating systems for ultimate comfort. We love designing spaces that are beautifully suited to be enjoyed year-round.
Though it seems far off, as the weather begins to cool, you’ll want to be sure that your interior spaces are ready for you to enjoy them to the fullest. Our Interior Design Department is also working on a basement renovation, which features custom built-ins, a custom-designed wet bar, a shuffleboard, and a ping pong table. Part of effective and beautiful design is optimizing the space that you have and giving it intent and purpose, all while being aesthetically pleasing.
Referred to us by Alyssa Dubin of Wallace Real Estate, these clients love to entertain and wanted beautiful, yet functional spaces in which to do so. The basement renovation will allow for this family to entertain all year round.
The bar area features high seating, functional storage, and a sub zero fridge that keeps both red and white wine temperature-controlled. This multipurpose fridge is a space efficient alternative for a full wine cellar or wine room, leaving more space in the room for the lounge area and bar seating. The color pallet is a modern mix of navy cabinetry with gold hardware. The room features a reclaimed hardwood shuffleboard table as well as a ping pong table, creating fun for all ages.
It’s never too soon to start thinking about home improvements. Our one piece of advice is to start working on these larger scale projects in advance to allow time for the necessary renovations and planning. Give us a call at 508/693/9197 to discuss your interior or exterior needs. All of these projects are still in the conceptual and planning phase. We are eager to continue sharing the details with you along the way, and can’t wait to share the finished products. Follow us on Instagram to keep up to date on these and our other projects.
We strive to make the process as simple as possible. All of our window treatment quotes and measurement appointments are complimentary. Our in-house Window Treatment Team does all of our measuring and installing. Keeping these services in-house means you have a point of contact for service and repairs.
Choosing to select and purchase your window treatments through Vineyard Decorators allows support for local business. It also means that you have a point of contact for servicing and general questions. All of our window treatments are custom ordered to fit your exact window dimensions, expertly measured and installed by our technicians.
We carry an array of name brands, such as Hunter Douglas, Horizons Window Fashions, Hartmann & Forbes and Conrad. We also can manufacture drapery and roman shades in our workroom. Our Design Consultants are always happy to discuss products selections during a complimentary in-store appointment.
Window Treatments may seem intimidating at first. There is no, “one size fits all” approach, and there are many different options to consider that all serve a unique purpose and function. Window treatments can block light, create privacy and make a room feel more luxurious and elevated. One important point to remember is that each room may require a different type of shade, and that’s okay! Thinking about the need’s in each room of your home will help determine which product is best suited for that space.
For instance, we often want more natural light in our living spaces (like the kitchen and the dining room) but less light or more light blocking options in bedrooms. These elements can be addressed with stylistic choices, either by the product itself or customizing a product with design elements like lining. Layering different products can also help you achieve your aesthetic goals while offering differing levels of light filtration for the ultimate feeling of luxury.

Thinking about the user and function of the room are major considerations when selecting window treatments. However, privacy and safety are paramount when choosing window coverings for rental homes, homes with pets and especially, homes with children. Whether a bedroom, playroom, or nursery, rooms designed for children can pose their own set of design challenges. Let our experienced design consultants help you navigate user-friendly functionality. When considering kids’ room window treatment options, prioritize safety, ease of maintenance, and light-filtering capabilities. Hunter Douglas offers a wide range of operating systems with child safety in mind. Cordless operated shades are our recommendation for areas used by children or homes with pets.
From control wands, to cordless to motorized options, we can help you select window treatments that integrate perfectly into your life. Hunter Douglas is just one of companies that offer power-operated systems for their products, allowing you to control your shades at the touch of a button or even from an app on your phone.
You can program individual shades or an entire room. With total control, you can open and close the shades at specific times of day, setting the scene for comfort as the light changes. One of our pro-tips is to decide on power-operated window treatments during the construction phase when possible.
Check out some of our favorite products this season:
Woven Woods
We love the organic elegance of a natural product and how the weave is “perfectly imperfect." The variation in tone of the natural fibers add warmth to any room.
Custom Drapery
Drapery is beautiful on its own or layered on top of another product. Simple and sophisticated panels of fabric create a warm and inviting feeling to a room.
Mounting the hardware closer to the ceiling above the window can make the room feel larger by adding a sense of height
Roller Shades
Roller shades are a modern and often, economic, choice in window coverings. Available in various levels of opacity, roller shades are a contemporary, clean covering choice. In addition to controlling the light in a room, they can also help protect against harmful UV rays.
Your complimentary in-store appointment with your Design Consultant will allow them the opportunity to suggest window treatment options that are safe, effective and beautiful. We can work with you to determine the product that best meets your design and function needs. When you have the right custom window treatments made to fit your windows just right, you are left with an elevated, cohesive feel, often harder to replicate with a pre-made product.

Our spacious showroom and storage facility allow us to both display and warehouse backstock furniture. We are capable of furnishing entire houses from our stocking furniture, and we do so dozens of times throughout the year.
With our White Glove Delivery Services, installation can be a breeze. All items are fully inspected and prepared by our team at our facility before installation. Keeping these services in-house minimizes opportunity for damage during the handling process. For those who are attempting to furnish a home remotely, or those with hectic schedules, we take care of the logistics of getting your furniture to the Vineyard.
Utilizing our curated stocking programs, we were able to achieve the client’s vision of a coastal inspired home. We used a mix of high and low price points throughout, selecting pieces that would be functional and suited for renting (as the home was purchased as an income property), but still offer the comfort and quality of a more high end project (since the owners use the house a few weeks out of the year). The elements of our stocking program offer a neutral base on which to build, allowing you to design your island life.
The main floor seating area features pieces from Four Seasons Furniture. Made in America, Four Seasons is a quality line of furniture that specializes in slipcovers. These pieces are slipcovered in eco-friendly fabrics that are an alternative to traditional performance fabrics. For those who aren’t looking for a treated fabric, washable slipcovers (like cotton) are an environmentally friendly option still suited for rentals or high traffic seating areas.
We’re obsessed with the way this sunroom turned out. The color pallet is bright and airy while still being durable, thanks to these performance materials. The seating area features a collection from Kingsley Bate, made of an all-weather rope that has the natural look of authentic hemp, while still being resistant to fading or tearing. The cushions are Sunbrella (also resistant to mold, mildew and fading), which makes them the perfect choice for a 3-season porch with a lot of natural light.
You can shop this collection and others from Kingsley Bate here - sidenote, our Outdoor Oasis Sale is still happening now.
The rug, from Dash & Albert, is constructed of polypropylene, a performance material that can stand up against sandy feet, muddy paws and a hearty meal.
In addition to name-brand furniture lines, we also carry our own line of furniture, manufactured and sourced abroad by our parent company, Island Imports. From outdoor and indoor furniture to decor, we bring in items from our factories in Indonesia, India and China at a competitive price point. Island Imports also distributes wholesale to retailers across the country. Shopping for these items in our store is like a treasure hunt. We have rows and rows of unique pieces in our showroom, you never know what you’ll find. Similar to an antique or vintage market, like Brimfield, the pieces are one-of-a-kind, and a wonderful way to add character to any room of your home.
This ladder is one of our imported items. We love functional decor, and this ladder is perfect for these Turkish hand towels. Our competitors sell items like this for up to $400, ours retails for under $100.
We also featured items from Island Imports in the entry way. The console and the baskets are part of our line.
The rug is also imported by us, an authentic, vintage, hand-knotted beauty, imported from Turkey.
The “boy’s hangout” room was intended to be a more casual seating area, where as upstairs was a bit more formal. This room is all about relaxation. These oversized chairs swivel around, so they can face the TV or the sectional, and glide back and forth. We love the addition of the surfboard coffee table.
This oversized sectional by LEE Industries is the ultimate lounge spot. Again, we chose a washable slipcover here, so the sectional is easy to clean (a must for a rental property) and it also feels and looks a bit more casual. These vintage textile pillows will be available in our store, Spring 2020.
The bedrooms coordinated the custom window coverings to the stitch of the linens, a request by the client for an easy turnover. We offer an array of window treatments from companies like Hunter Douglas, and we can also fabricate window coverings in our workroom. In case you didn’t already know, we also offer complimentary measurement appointments and estimates on all window treatments. We chose a simple linen for each of the rooms for a clean, casual aesthetic.
In addition to fabricating custom window treatments, we also have an on-site workroom that recovers existing and constructs new furniture. These headboards were custom made in our workroom in a neutral fabric complimentary to the window treatments and bedding.
Headboards can be an economic way to furnish a bedroom, especially in an income property. When paired with a tailored bedskirt (like the one pictured here), you still get the polished end result without having a more traditional platform bed. Headboards tend to occupy less space in the room, so we often suggest them for spaces with tighter size constraints.
This is not your grandmother's bedskirt. Gone are the days where a bedskirt meant ruffles and frills (thankfully, might we add). We chose a lightweight, tailored, linen option for these bedrooms to give a more elevated look, while still staying within the client’s budget.
The final step was to accessorize. We chose coastal accents to tie the home together, again, using a mix of high and low to achieve the right look while still remaining in budget
We love a good #shelfie moment. This was the perfect place to highlight an original piece of artwork by local artist, Dan VanLandingham.
Supporting the local community is a huge part of our business and we carry local artists work throughout our showroom.
In addition to original pieces, we also have a number of reproductions and prints available. Prints are a great way to still display local art in your home, but get it at an affordable price point.
Furnishing an entire house may seem like a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. We have the unique ability to furnish entire houses from in-stock furniture and with immediate delivery. We are also firm believers that elevated design doesn't have to come at an elevated price point. Our showroom features pieces that cater to almost any design aesthetic, and our skilled team of Design Consultants will gladly help you put together a space that blends form and function.
This spring has certainly looked different than any other we can remember, but don't let the current situation get in the way of creating a home that serves as a backdrop for beautiful memories.
Let us help you Design Your Island Life.

Take everything off of your shelves, out of the room, or away from table tops and dressers. Starting with a clean slate will give you the opportunity to reevaluate the space and determine how to best use it. Let yourself be inspired by the clean canvas. You can start small here, work your way up to the whole room by starting with a vignette.
After you’ve cleared everything out, put things back with intention. Don’t be afraid to do this a couple times until you’ve landed on the perfect combo. Try rearranging the pillows on your sofa or bed in a new way. Bring the throw blanket from your bedroom into the living room. Use this opportunity to fluff and rotate the cushions on your sofa to make it look new again.
Instead of keeping it in the bookcase, bring your go-to cookbook to the kitchen and lay it on the counter. Leave your favorite cutting board out and style it underneath the cabinet instead of inside it. Unearth your old family recipes and store them in a tin next to the board. Now, they're accessible and still aesthetically pleasing.
Add real life to your interiors. Head outside and forage for flowers or greenery to freshen up your nightstand, coffee table or counter top. We are lucky enough to be surrounded by nature at every turn and love the plethora of flora and fauna available to us.
With warmer weather on the horizon, a few blooms and branches can refresh your interiors and bring a spring feeling into your home. We love that design, like nature is cyclical.
Take this opportunity to look through your attic, basement or anywhere else you store things for items long forgotten. An old heirloom or a keepsake add character to your interiors. Vintage elements help make your space feel unique and personal, elevating your style and breaking you away from "cookie cutter" design.
These items don't have to have a long, involved backstory. Whether it's something you made as a child, an old vase from your grandmother's house or a souvenir from a vacation, at some point it meant enough to you to save. Sometimes these items are a bit imperfect and that's one of the best parts! Life isn't always perfect and sometimes it's a little messy and we love incorporating elements that capture that kind of authenticity in our design.
Design is just as much about the way things are presented as it is about the items themselves. We love how design an be bold, yet approachable, surprising yet familiar, and when it's done well, a single element is just as impactful as the whole room. The items in our home are a reflection of who we are, and we can use them to tell our story and create a backdrop for a life well lived.

The first step to creating the outdoor oasis of your dreams is identifying your outdoor style. Are you relaxed and laid back, do you like an eclectic mix of materials and patterns? Or do you like a more formal, matched look? By layering outdoor rugs, pillows and accessories to your outdoor space, you can bring your outdoor space to life. There’s no reason that your exteriors can’t be every bit as comfortable and stylish as your interiors.
Dash & Albert is one of our go-to resources for outdoor rugs and pillows. Their polypropylene rugs are durable and made to withstand sunscreened feet, sandy paws and potlucks. Laying down a rug under a dining or lounge area anchors the furniture on and around it.
Dash & Albert’s line of outdoor throw pillows are an easy way to introduce color and pattern to your outdoor oasis. Luckily, they also happen to coordinate flawlessly with their rugs. You can curate a collection of complementary colors.
Or a single hue can act as inspiration and you can break it up with natural elements and textures.
Just like in our interior designs, accessorizing our exteriors isn’t just about the pillows and rugs. It’s also about objects that highlight your personality and add a little extra something to the “room”. For our exteriors, we love selecting functional accessories.
We love this little bluetooth radio from SALTE in Edgartown. They are one of our go-to resources for curated home accents and personal accessories.
We love the vintage inspired design of this speaker, and the best part is that it’s splash proof - pool party anyone? You can purchase this radio on SALTE’s website here
Outdoor grills may not be top of mind when you’re thinking of accessorizing, but if you’re trying to up your patio game this summer, you may want to consider adding one. Nothing says summer like local, fresh grilled veggies, and Crane Appliance in Vineyard Haven has got you covered with a large selection of gas, charcoal and electric grills.
And no grilled meal is complete without seasoning. LeRoux at Home in Vineyard Haven is our marinating mecca. Their selection of oils and vinegars, not to mention their spices and rubs, can make a grill master out of anyone. Shop their selection here and read their tasting notes.
If you swap a beach day for a backyard afternoon, an umbrella is a necessity for your backdoor oasis. It will protect you and your loved ones from harmful UV rays and allow you to enjoy your outdoor space throughout the entire day. From stationary parasols to cantilevers, we have you covered.
As the daylight fades, having appropriate lighting in your outdoor space is integral to keep the party going. Lanterns are a great way to provide ambient lighting at dinner or for an evening cocktail hour. During the day, they are another element of texture that adds depth and style to our outdoor spaces.
There’s something about a yard party that invokes the smells and sounds of a crackling fire. It conjures images of watching the sun fade and the sounds of chatter as the evening begins to cool. One of our favorite structured seating areas is around the fire pit. We often place adirondack chairs around fire pits in our projects. Perfect for this summer, they keep guests at a set distance apart, they’re comfortable and there is something so quintessentially summer about them.

As our Interior Design department has grown, we felt like the next step was to create a functional and beautiful space for our team to work on larger scale projects. We have also expanded our services to include Interior Architecture, allowing us to take on projects that require a bit more comprehensive renovations.
The room is built around our reclaimed teak conference table. Fully extended, this table seats 10, so not only is it a fitting spot for a presentation, it’s a space large enough for our daily team meetings. The natural beauty of the reclaimed teak adds texture to the bright white, clean design of the room. We chose these black rattan arm chairs for an added element of texture and their modern appeal against the rustic teak. The rug is a hand-knotted vintage piece, imported from Turkey. Especially with a clean, bright white aesthetic, a vintage piece helps add history and character to a room.
We’ve been dreaming about the perfect space to house the interior design department for the last few years. Our showroom is 2 floors and over 30,000 sqft, so there was no shortage of floor space. We tossed around seemingly every possibility until we saw the old fabric library with new eyes. The fabric library was the oldest part of the current Vineyard Decorators building.
One of our favorite parts about the renovation process is discovering and rediscovering elements of a room that make it unique. For instance, underneath the previous stick-down faux wood flooring we unearthed the existing concrete floors, which we polished to match the rest of our showroom. The result is a polished, clean and industrial feeling space that tied in perfectly to our vision for the studio.
a snapshot during renovations, after we removed the old fabric racks.
After we exposed the concrete and removed the fabric storage racks, we were pleasantly surprised by the amount of natural light that flooded the room thanks to the existing skylights. Natural light is key when our design team is selecting fabric and finish samples, because it allows us to see the true tones of the materials. We highlighted the skylights by adding a shiplap detail on the ceiling.
For functional storage and another presentation staging space, our Interior Design Team designed this show stopping island. Both sides of the island offer discrete and organized storage for design projects and our customer files. We worked closely with JR Construction & Son’s, here on the Vineyard, to bring our vision to life.
We chose quartz by LG Hausys in the color Muse for the countertop of the island. It has the perfect amount of veining, enough to provide visual interest, but not enough to compete with the samples that we lay out on top of it. Quartz is one of our favorite materials for countertops, because it’s durable, sleek and nonporous.
We paired it with another quartz faux concrete countertop, in the color Pebble: Honed, on the adjacent wall, which houses our clear mini-fridge, courtesy of Crane Appliance. We want the studio to have an element of comfort, so we keep a few beverages on hand for our client meetings. We carried the same faux concrete countertop into our fabric library.
This cabinet is one of the only pieces from the existing space that we kept. In the old space, it was overflowing and hidden behind books and samples. We cleaned it out and opted for a stylized way to house tile and stone samples.
The focal point of the room is an original by local artist, Colin Ruel. To say we’re obsessed with his work is an understatement. We love the way the colors of this piece pop off the wall. Colin’s work encapsulates the natural beauty of the Vineyard. You can find this piece and others in our showroom. We’re passionate about supporting and fostering the success of the Vineyard community, and we proudly display the work of local artists throughout our showroom.
We kept natural elements throughout the space to help provide layers of texture and visual interest. These woven baskets are from our own line of manufactured furniture from our parent company, Island Imports. Our factories produce goods abroad and we are fortunate enough to distribute domestically to our wholesale accounts across the country. We import items like these and many others on shipping containers a few times a year. These baskets keep us organized and as a bonus, they’re pretty and come in multiple sizes.
The pendants are from one of our stocking vendors, Authentic Models. They have a modern, industrial feel, which is complemented by the concrete flooring and darker accents.
One of the driving factors behind this space, other than supporting our own in-house design team, was creating a collaborative workspace for our trade partners, specifically in the design field. We have been fortunate enough to be able to assist and collaborate with other Vineyard institutions such as Studio MOS, Lake Street Studios, Hutker Architects, Squash Meadow, South Mountain and Worth & Wing (just to name a few), on their projects. We love the Vineyard community and we love that we’re able to act as a resource for other local businesses.
If you’re interested in becoming one of our trade partners, email us at sales@vineyarddecorators.com
There are still a few finishing touches needed for our design studio. Stay tuned for updates on our hardware selection and our barn door, which will go on the entrance to the fabric sample library.
